If you have ever had the pleasure of visiting an Automat, you will appreciate this little slice of Horn and Hardart history. In 1902, Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart opened their first Horn and Hardart in Philadelphia, but it was not until 1912 that they got around to opening one in New York City.

The last Automat imported from Germany was modified before a fourth Automat opened in 1912 at 21 South Eleventh Street. By now, Horn and Hardart had their chief engineer, John Fritsche, design a machine that would cater to American tastes. (Fritsche continued designing machines for Horn & Hardart until his death in 1947 at seventy-five.)

An Automat did exist in Chicago (likely on Van Buren Street in the Loop), but Chicagoans didn’t really cotton to it as Easterners did. Is Horn and Hardart still in business? The Horn & Hardart name was used for a now-dormant chain of coffee shops in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Horn & Hardart Coffee Co. closed its last coffee shop in 2005.
